Hot from the microwave oven is moshits - a Joomla 1.0.x plugin (mambot) allowing you to place a {moshits} tag anywhere in your content item to display the page hits for that item. Additionally you can use {moshits left}, {moshits right}, {moshits center}, {moshits justified}, and {moshits none} to position the display of page hits.

Install using the Joomla Mambot installer, and then publish it as a Site Mambot. Has been tested on Joomla 1.0.12, and the output is W3C compliant. Get it here.
